Cupcakes & Cookies

This weekend I am co-hosting a co-ed baby shower for my friend Julie. Of course I volunteered to make cupcakes and iced sugar cookies.

When it came to the cupcakes, I was completely stumped. So I had a perfect excuse to order Martha Stewart's Cupcakes. As if I needed an excuse....

I decided to go with the One-Bowl Chocolate Cupcakes (page 152) with the Swiss Meringue Buttercream (page 304). I was really nervous about the cupcake batter because it was so soupy, but the cupcakes turned out super moist and delicious.

The buttercream was a different story. I have made Swiss Meringue Buttercream before but this time around it was challenging and frustrating. Although I consider myself a half way decent cookie decorator, I had the hardest time piping the tops of the cupcakes. No two are alike and mostly lopsided. Nothing sprinkles can't fix...

For the cookies, I went with the bib cutter in pink & green pastels. They are okay....I should have spent some time in the baby section at Target to get inspiration for designs.

Half way decent COOKIE decorator? I think your COOKIES are great, Melissa!!
I own MS book and love it... got a kit from Wilton that has "special" cupcake tips that make decorating easier... Have a nice day!

Thanks Bea, you are so sweet!! I almost bought the Wilton kit, but instead just bought one of the bigger tips for decorating.

I love that MS cupcake recipe. Although if you don't beat the batter enough, you get totally wonky cupcakes.
PS that's the recipe I use for the shop. Cupcakes hold for 3 whole days.
Your bib cookies are adorable. I have a cutter, but have NEVER used it.
As for frosting the cupcakes I use a 008 and 009 tip for vanilla buttercream. Those are GIANT round tips. I don't use them for chocolate cuz I think it will look like something else on top of a cupcake! I'll check the star tip that I use for chocolate and send it to you via fb.
Again, I LOVE the bibs. Very nice job!!
