Trial and error...
Last night I decided to ice the Hawaiian themed cookies. The shirts were challenging at first but I think they turned out okay. The top layer of pink piping is too thick and I should have used a smaller tip. I used the same technique for the pineapple and palm tree. They were pretty easy, actually. And the sun is a piece of cake.

Your nautical cookies don't look as horrible as you make them sound. I'm impressed with your designs. Of course, this is coming from the girl who will eat your frosted cookies regardless of how they look. =)
